On this retreat Annabel, Raquel and Rosie will join together their love and expertise in painting, yoga, cooking and hospitality to bring you a special and unique experience in this peaceful oasis, whilst responding to your individual needs and requests.

Come and benefit from this unique opportunity to really focus and develop your painting skills, whilst gathering new ideas and inspiration, practising yoga, meeting like-minded people and enjoying a perfect climate for painting outside in a beautiful environment.

WHY KERALA?

I fell in love with India when I was 16, even before I'd ever been there. I wanted to go so much that I saved up and went for the first time when I was 18. I travelled all over India, Nepal and into Tibet. I've had lots of adventures, but I've always felt safe and completely at home.

Just before the pandemic I revisited India again after 25 years, and I've been going back ever since. Now as well as painting I visit my teacher in Mumbai and listen to the teachings which constantly help me to have more peace in my daily life.

I first went to the Beach House through a recommendation from a friend. Rosie saw me painting on the balcony and suggested l do a retreat there. Raquel and I had wanted to combine Painting and Yoga for a long time and when I got back to Spain I began planning.

So that's how this began…

Kerala is a beautiful part of India, unlike any other. It's a good introduction to India if it's your first time. Kannur is off the beaten track so it's ideal for a retreat. The Beach House is incredibly relaxing and an amazing place to just be, I've been there many times and always find it very calm, serene and I’m always looked after like family. It has the perfect space for a painting studio and a yoga platform under the palm trees.

Raquel and I absolutely love this retreat, we enjoy it so much and we hope you will love it too and take home many happy memories and new friendships.

“Thanks to Annabel & Raquel's total care-giving from the heart I had the best time ever on the retreat.”

PAINTING

Annabel Keatley's approach to teaching is to gently direct, encourage and inspire a person whilst they are finding their own unique way to express themselves and enjoy the process.
A full-time award-winning artist, with over 20 years of teaching experience, Annabel will get you using paint in new ways whilst trying fresh approaches and freeing up.

Painting in sketchbooks will be complimented by experimental excercises, demonstrations, and working in the studio with mixed media and acrylic paint.

Annabel will guide and encourage you whilst you absorb and record new colours, pattern and atmosphere.

She will share with you her methods of painting outside in nature, working with this new inspiration in the studio, and finally creating mixed media paintings.

HATHA YOGA

Raquel Rodríguez has been practicing yoga for more than 15 years. She took her first Hatha Yoga Course in 2015. She has her own business and has been teaching in Almuñecar (Granada) since 2018.

Raquel believes that yoga is not only on the mat but ideally extends into everyday living: promoting balance, emotional well-being and harmony with yourself and everything around you.

During the retreat, we will practice Hatha Yoga in the mornings (asanas, pranayamas, meditation and relaxation) to wake up the body, mind and spirit, and a yin yoga class in the evenings to prepare for a good night sleep. Some evenings after dinner, we will have Yoga Nidra and chanting of Mantras, this being optional.  All levels including beginners are welcome.

THE LOCATION

At the beach house we will be looked after by Rosie and Nazir, who love to share their culture with guests and have hosted numerous retreats.

The homestay, situated near Kannur, North Kerala, is featured by The Guardian and with 5-star reviews previous guests return again and again, recommending not only the delicious home cooked food but the friendly atmosphere and the warm, engaging hosts. Simple but comfortable with lots of charm, Annabel is one of these return guests.

We will have use of the whole homestay and guests will have their own double room with balcony overlooking the sea with attached bathroom.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be taken together outside and access to the studio and a canoe to take trips up the river will be available all hours.

Rosie can cater for glutten-free, allergies and a vegan diet.

Winner of 2025 Tripadvisors’ Travellers Choice Award.

“The retreat provided an intimate experience in creativity and self-care while navigating our way through a foreign land.”

Follow-on trip to

FORT KOCHI

The Fort Kochi Sketching Trip is an inspiring and stimulating 5 nights and 4 days add-on to the retreat. It is a complete contrast to the Beach House location and therefore a wonderful compliment to the retreat. As we have already formed a group it’s a special time for us to be together and experience all that Kochi has to offer in art and culture, whilst sketching.

We spend the 5 nights at Spice Holiday Homestay. Centrally located in the heart of Fort Kochi, on a very pretty and quiet street, we will be able to just step out of the door and walk to the restaurants and shops, the chinese fishing nets and many of the sights. If we need to get short rickshaw trips to any Biennale exhibits, they too are a few steps away.

The owner of the homestay, Anthony, is the 6th generation to run this family house, he is very knowledgeable and a natural storyteller. He is also extremely kind and wants all his guests to get the most out of their stay in Fort kochi. The rooms are clean and comfortable with attached bathrooms.

Backwaters Trip

Last year I requested a special backwaters trip for painters. The trip that was arranged for us was beyond my expectations - we painted in amongst pink water lilies, had breakfast on a house boat, visited crafts women working with local materials and finished with lunch served on banana leafs. Our guide knew all about birds and life on the backwaters. So if you are a bird lover, don’t forget binoculars.

The food is exceptional in Fort Kochi, with influences from all around the world.

The Kochi Biennale

This year the Biennale is on, and is renowned for being the largest contemporary avant garde art exhibition in all of Asia. Fort Kochi comes alive at this time of year with art exhibitions popping up everywhere and the Biennale itself taking over venues like Heritage houses, old warehouses, galleries, etc. with site specific art from both Indian and  international artists. I am sure we will find new and inspiring artists and their works.

What’s included

On this trip everything is included - all meals and excursions, entry tickets, tutoring,  accommodation, train ticket, taxis and rickshaws.

Cost is £850 per person.

Please see itinerary for details.

“This was wonderful… Superseded my highest hopes.”

“What a well conceived, well crafted retreat, in details and execution, from the place choosen, with its beach setting delicious and nutritious Keralan meals, well stocked plein air style art studio, inspirational cultural events, yoga sessions amidst the coconut forests and at night time candlelit on the beach by the Arabian Sea, and the teachings of the chakras to mirror the 7 days.... I felt we formed into an open, warm and caring group in response to how you both held the retreat. I loved all that I learnt”
